Those room dimensions and the two-coat plan are chosen assumptions. The coverage comes from the BEHR ULTRA Interior Ceiling Paint technical sheet, which lists 250–400 square feet per gallon depending on application and surface porosity. This example uses the lower end, excludes application loss and is a planning estimate.
Draw the surfaces before calculating
A symmetrical vaulted room has different shapes to measure. The long side walls may be ordinary rectangles. Each end wall may have a triangular section above a rectangle. The ceiling consists of two sloping surfaces meeting at a ridge.
Sketch each surface and label it. Keep ceiling paint separate from wall paint when they are different products or colors. Combining every square foot into one paint total can leave you with enough paint overall but too little of the product needed for one surface.
Use actual dimensions from plans or measurements you can obtain safely. Do not climb onto furniture to reach a ridge. If high surfaces cannot be measured safely, have a suitable professional measure them. This guide calculates quantities; it does not specify access equipment or a painting procedure.
Calculate the ceiling from the slope
For this example, the ridge runs along the room's 16-foot length. The room is 12 feet wide, so each half has a horizontal run of 6 feet. The rise from the side-wall top to the ridge is 4 feet.
The run is horizontal. The slope length follows the ceiling. They are different measurements.
Slope length = square root of (horizontal run squared + vertical rise squared).
Here, the slope length is √(6² + 4²) = √52, or about 7.21 feet. This is a direct application of right-triangle geometry, not a manufacturer coverage allowance.
Total ceiling area = room length × sum of the two slope lengths.
Using both equal slopes gives 16 × (√52 + √52) = about 230.76 square feet. The floor footprint is only 192 square feet. Using the footprint as ceiling area would miss about 38.76 square feet in this chosen room.
Convert area into paint
The quantity formula is:
US gallons = paintable area × number of coats ÷ coverage per gallon.
For the example ceiling, 230.7553 × 2 ÷ 250 = about 1.85 gallons before loss. If you purchase only whole US gallon containers, that rounds up to two. Check available container sizes and the amount you intend to keep for touch-ups before ordering.
The margin can change that purchase decision. An explicitly chosen 10% allowance gives 1.8460 × 1.10 = about 2.03 gallons, which rounds to three whole gallons. That 10% is an illustration, not a BEHR recommendation. Discuss a suitable allowance for the actual application method rather than treating this percentage as universal.
The technical sheet's coverage excludes spraying loss. Do not assume the lower coverage figure automatically includes every source of waste. Primer, where required by the product instructions and surface condition, also needs its own quantity calculation.
Why a single ceiling multiplier is unreliable
This table keeps the room at the same chosen 12-by-16-foot footprint and changes only the rise. It assumes a centered ridge, two equal flat ceiling planes, two coats and 250 square feet per gallon. No allowance is included.

The extra surface changes with the geometry. A fixed percentage added to every floor footprint cannot describe all these ceilings. Retain the unrounded slope lengths in your calculation and round the final quantity for purchase.
Measure the gable walls separately
Now assume the example room's side walls are 8 feet high. The rectangular wall area below that height is 2 × (12 + 16) × 8 = 448 square feet.
Each triangular gable adds 12 × 4 ÷ 2 = 24 square feet. The two gables therefore bring the gross wall area to 496 square feet. Subtract actual unpainted openings. If the chosen opening total is 40 square feet, the paintable wall area becomes 456 square feet.
Use the wall product's coverage and coat requirement for those 456 square feet. The ceiling product's technical specification should not silently become the wall product's specification.
Averaging the low and peak heights across the whole room would give a 10-foot height here. Multiplying the entire 56-foot perimeter by that height produces 560 square feet, which overstates the actual 496-square-foot wall area. The side walls do not rise to the gable peak. Calculate the shapes that are present.
Adapt the worksheet to your room
For an off-center ridge, calculate each side using its own horizontal run and rise. Add the two slope areas. If the ceiling has a flat center section, dormer or exposed beam faces, list those surfaces separately instead of forcing them into the symmetrical example.
